CNC routers that cut aluminium

A machine that cuts aluminium and a machine that cuts wood can look identical in a photograph and differ by a factor of ten in stiffness. Aluminium does not forgive a flexible frame: the cutter deflects, the chip reloads, and the end mill snaps.

What we check before you pay

The frame decides more than the spindle

An extruded-aluminium gantry on a 3018-class machine flexes visibly under a 3mm cutter in 6061. A steel-welded or thick-plate frame does not. Ask for the gantry material, its section, and the unsupported span — and treat "industrial grade" with no numbers as a decoration.

Ballscrew or leadscrew, and whether it is supported

A T8 leadscrew has backlash you will feel as a ridge on every direction change. Ground ballscrews with angular-contact bearings do not. Which one, what diameter, what pitch, and whether the ends are fixed or floating — all of it is specifiable and rarely stated.

Spindle power is not the headline number

A 500W trim-router-style spindle will not hold torque at the low RPM aluminium wants. A 2.2kW water-cooled spindle with a VFD will. But the useful figure is torque at the RPM you will actually run, not the peak watt number on the box.

The electrical side has to be legal where you are

A machine sold domestically in China ships with a Chinese plug and, frequently, no CE or FCC file. Selling or operating it in the EU or US brings the machinery and equipment-authorisation rules into play, and they are the buyer's problem, not the seller's.

Guarding and stop circuits are usually absent

Most desktop machines arrive with no enclosure, no interlock and an e-stop wired only to the controller rather than to the spindle. If the machine goes into a workplace rather than a garage, that gap is what an inspector looks at first.

A test cut answers what the specification cannot

We can run your material on the machine before it ships — your alloy, a stated cutter, recorded feed and speed, and the finished part measured. That is the only evidence that settles this question, and it is cheap compared with a machine that cannot do the job.

How an order runs

  1. Tell us the part, not the machine Material and alloy, part envelope, tolerance you actually need, and how many a week. That decides the machine class before any model is on the table.
  2. We shortlist against the three Frame, drive train and spindle, each with numbers rather than adjectives, and an honest statement of what each candidate will not do.
  3. Test cut in your material Optional and recommended for anything metal. Tool, RPM, feed, depth of cut and the measured result, photographed, before you commit.
  4. Electrical and compliance check Voltage, plug, VFD settings, and what documentation exists for your market. Where a file does not exist we say so rather than implying it does.
  5. Quote and approval Machine, tooling, spares, crating, our fee, freight and duty, itemised. Nothing is bought until you approve it.
  6. Crate and ship Machine tools are dense and fragile in specific places. Crating, corner protection and how the gantry is locked for transit are agreed before it leaves.
